History…Pasadena T&F All-Comer Meets

Summer track and field “all-comer meets” were held at John Muir College field from 1953 until 1955 when the meets moved to Alhambra HS…. Don Winton, former PCC thrower/co-founder of Pasadena AA, and renowned illustrator/sculptor, was one of the founders of those meets. T&F stat icon Dick Bank remembers only a handful of fans watching those TEN world records set in Pasadena.
Researched by Larry Knuth from:
T&F News bound volumes at LA 84 library/Pasadena Star News archives/Dick Bank conversation

August 1, 1953… THREE WORLD RECORDS!!... ’52 Olympic javelin champion Cy Young set a world record of 256-4. Two-time Olympic pole vault champion Bob Richards set a world record in the All Around (ten events) of 7,031 points. And Fortune Gordien set a discus world record of 189-2.50.

August 8, 1953 at Muir College field: Discus legend Fortune Gordien set a world record of 190-7

August 15, 1953…Bud Held, throwing with a javelin made by his brother Dick Held, threw a world record of 258-2 and later improved the record at a Pasadena meet (date not verified) to 263-10. Held was the first American to hold the javelin world record.

August 22, 1953…Fortune Gordien broke his own discus world record with a throw of 194-6 (dirt rings in this era!). He had two throws over 190. Stella Walsh set a women’s American record at 300 meters (40.4).

August 29, 1954….Bill Miller broke the world record in the javelin with a 266-8 throw.

August 18, 1956….A “throwers” meet was set up by Don Winton and shot put world record holder Parry O’Brien improved his world record to 61-4.50. The ’56 Melbourne Olympics were held in the fall in Australia and O’Brien used this meet as one of his preparation meets prior to leaving for Australia.

September 22, 1956…In an apparent “throws only” all comers competition Bud Held broke his own national record with a throw of 270-0. Two European throwers had broken Held’s 1953 record throw.

Unofficial research (T&F News/Newspaper archives) validates TEN world records set on the Muir College field in the mid-‘50s all-comers meets. Each of the meets received good sports page coverage in the newspapers of that era. John Muir College was a “tech” school on the John Muir HS campus.
